Hello there,

What is the landscape of professional sport? My short answer is that it isn't a harder version of a normal workplace; it's a different kind of organization, and that's where my new podcast series begins.

The series asks one big question about elite sport, what makes a high-performance culture?, and takes one smaller question a week for seven weeks. Episode 1 is out now.

Episode 1 of 7: What is the landscape of professional sport? Dr. MCB's Curiosities

In Episode 1 (27 minutes), I cover:

  • The eight pressures that stack in elite sport, from everyone running on a different clock to the power gap between the people who decide and everyone else, and why they're loaded differently in every building.

  • The silence calculus: when speaking up costs a lot and changes little, people go quiet, not because they're cowards but because they can count.

  • Why the most information sits with the people who have the least power to use it, and why the training room is the real information hub of most organizations.

Also on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

One question to take into your next staff meeting: instead of “why don't people speak up here?”, ask “what about this place makes staying quiet the smart choice?”

Next Tuesday, 27 October: Episode 2, “Is it safe to speak up in professional sport?”

Dr. MCB

P.S. The series draws on the book Madeline Antony and I wrote, The Psychology of High-Performance Sports Organizations: Culture, Safety, and Leadership (Routledge).
